German Candies

Perhaps the most well-known candies in the German cuisine are chocolate and marzipan.

German chocolate ranks with Swiss and Belgian chocolate as the finest in the world. Chocolate is so loved in Germany that it is engrained into the culture. Children grow up enjoying it more than any other candy. Chocolate is also part of many traditions and celebrations. In fact, Germany is second in the world (just slightly behind Switzerland) when it comes to the highest annual chocolate consumption.

Germany has a long standing tradition of marzipan production, especially in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is used in many cakes, candies, desserts, and cookies, especially during Christmas and for New Year's Eve.

However, on Sundays or special occasions, when there is more time to enjoy a long, cozy breakfast, Germans often have something sweet to end the meal. This may be a sweet bread, cake, or an egg-based dish.
