International Bittering Unit (IBU)
The International Bittering Unit (IBU) is a measure of the bitterness of a beer. The bitterness of a beer comes from the amount of hops used - the more hops used to make the beer, the more bitter the finished beer will be. The more bitter a beer tastes, the higher the IBU number it receives.
The IBU number does not always accurately measure the bitterness of the beer because bitterness is subjective to the taste of the drinker. However, the IBU number can be used to get a general idea of how bitter the beer is and to compare beer styles.
